Earlier this week, Congressman Ronny Jackson reintroduced the Rural Health Care Technical Assistance Act. This legislation aims to formalize and expand an existing United States Department of Agriculture program that offers essential technical assistance to rural health care facilities. The goal is to prevent hospital closures, strengthen crucial health services in rural areas, and improve the financial and operational stability of these institutions. Representative Jill Tokuda co-led the bill in the House.
"As a physician and West Texas native, I've seen firsthand the vital role rural hospitals play in our communities," said Rep. Jackson. "Unfortunately, too many of our rural health care facilities are on the verge of closure, and if they do, the entire community is left vulnerable. This bill is critical to helping ensure these hospitals have the tools and resources needed to stay open and continue providing quality, accessible healthcare to rural Americans."
"I’ve heard too many stories from constituents across my district – one of the most rural in the country – about the challenges they face trying to get basic healthcare," said Rep. Jill Tokuda. "Our rural hospitals are lifelines, and investing in them is critical to maintaining a strong rural health safety net that ensures patients don't have to travel for hours to receive the healthcare they need." She added her support for introducing this important bill with Rep. Jackson.
Alan Morgan, CEO of National Rural Health Association stated: “The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) applauds Representatives Jackson (R-TX) and Tokuda (D-HI) for their introduction of the Rural Health Care Technical Assistance Program Act.” He emphasized its potential impact on preventing hospital closures and improving performance for facilities receiving Rural Development funds.
Lisa Kidder Hrobsky from American Hospital Association expressed appreciation: “We appreciate Reps. Jackson and Tokuda’s attention to the needs of rural hospitals.” She noted how important assistance with operations can be through this program.
Sarah Hohmann from National Association of Rural Health Clinics thanked both representatives for championing rural providers' unique needs: “Targeted technical assistance helps to ensure long-term sustainability.”
John Hawkins from Texas Hospital Association also commended their leadership: “THA is grateful for the leadership...to ensure federal resources are available,” emphasizing access importance especially within large states like Texas.
John Henderson from Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals shared concerns over risks faced by rural Texas hospitals endorsing support: "That’s why TORCH endorses...and appreciates Dr. Jackson’s leadership."
Ellen Kugler representing The Alliance of Safety-Net Hospitals echoed support highlighting continued service necessity: “The Alliance...is pleased…Rural hospitals across need more support if they are going continue serve communities.”
