Today, Representative Ronny Jackson (TX-13) published an opinion editorial on Military.com titled "Setting the Record Straight on the V-22 Osprey," which discusses the military capabilities of the V-22 aircraft.
Jackson, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, addresses concerns raised after a CV-22 Osprey crash off the coast of Japan in November 2023. The incident has led to increased scrutiny of the aircraft.
"The loss of any service member is an absolute tragedy," Jackson writes. He argues that discussions about the V-22 Osprey have become disproportionately negative and often overlook key facts about its role in military operations.
Critics claim that the Osprey is more prone to accidents than other military platforms. However, Jackson cites data indicating otherwise. According to Gen. Eric M. Smith, commandant of the Marine Corps, "They're completely safe. They have a better safety record than most aircraft."
Jackson highlights that the MV-22 variant has proven reliable in challenging environments and has a mishap rate per 100,000 flight hours "equal to or less than any airframe flown." He compares its safety record favorably against conventional helicopters like the H-60 Black Hawk and H-47 Chinook.
The unique tilt-rotor design of the V-22 allows it to take off and land in confined spaces while flying faster and farther than traditional helicopters. These capabilities are crucial for combat, medical evacuation operations, and disaster relief efforts.
Jackson emphasizes that ensuring service members' safety remains a top priority. He notes that skilled professionals work diligently at every stage of the V-22's lifecycle to maintain its safety and effectiveness.
"We must remember and honor the eight airmen who tragically lost their lives in the mishap of Gundam 22," Jackson states. He urges against overreaction that could degrade military operational capabilities.
The Department of Defense conducted an investigation into the incident and is addressing its findings to ensure continued safe operation of the Osprey.
"It is the duty of Congress to rely on facts, not fears," Jackson concludes. He advocates for continued support and investment in this combat-proven asset to enhance future security and maintain military advantages.
