The Texas economy added 243,900 private-sector positions over the past month as unemployment numbers continue to decrease.
In June, Amarillo witnessed 7.6% unemployment, a percentage point below the 8.6% rate for the state. Andrew Freeman, who is the director of planning and development services in Amarillo, says these numbers might be the highest of the surge.
“Hopefully what we saw was the worst of it,” Freeman told KFDA Channel 10 News. "End of March, mid-April, but after that, once folks are getting a little more comfortable going out, shopping more, hopefully, we’ll get past that point. It will take time."
Bryan Daniel of the Texas Workforce Commission says the numbers are evidence that Amarillo is progressing.
“June’s labor market numbers demonstrate we are moving in the right direction,” Daniel said. “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, the Texas Workforce Commission is committed to adapting to the needs of our great state.”
