According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the population of older adults in the U.S. is continuing to rise while numbers in younger age brackets are shrinking. From 2020 through 2024, Americans ages 65 and up increased by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease for those under 18. The nation’s older population has expanded considerably in the last century, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that close to half of adults in this range, about 28 million people, could require long-term services and support. The research also predicts that more than a third of the group is likely to need nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
