Representative Ronny Jackson announced on May 12 the opening of the new High Explosives Science and Engineering (HESE) facility at Pantex, a project that replaces 15 World War II-era buildings with a modern center for high explosives research and nuclear weapons modernization in the Texas Panhandle.
The development is considered significant for national security and local infrastructure. The HESE facility aims to support ongoing efforts to maintain the United States’ nuclear deterrent while improving operational efficiency, safety standards, and mission readiness.
Jackson said, “The completion of Pantex’s new HESE facility is a major win for the Texas Panhandle and our national security. As Pantex continues to play a critical role in maintaining our nuclear deterrent, this investment modernizes the infrastructure needed to safely and effectively meet future mission demands. I’m proud to have helped secure this funding to replace outdated WWII-era buildings with a cutting-edge facility, and I’ll continue working to strengthen our national defense while reinforcing the Panhandle’s vital role in America’s security infrastructure.”
Since taking office, Jackson has secured $136.36 million in federal funding for this project through annual appropriations and defense legislation. Funding includes $20 million in fiscal year 2023, $101.36 million in fiscal year 2024, and $15 million allocated for fiscal year 2025.
Jackson has served as U.S. Representative for Texas’s 13th district since replacing Mac Thornberry in 2021, according to Ballotpedia. He was born in Levelland, Texas in 1967 and currently lives in Amarillo; he graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991.
Looking ahead, Jackson said he remains committed to advocating for investments that strengthen military readiness, support local jobs, and reinforce the strategic importance of the region.
